This week, Hachette Book Group canceled the U.S. publication of Shy Girl, a horror novel by Mia Ballard. The UK edition, published in November, was also pulled from shelves. The reason: evidence that large language models were used to generate the text without disclosure.
The book had been self-published in early 2025, racked up thousands of ratings on Goodreads, and was picked up by Hachette's Orbit imprint for a wider release. Then readers started noticing problems — stilted phrasing, repetitive patterns, the kind of artifacts that experienced readers are learning to spot. A YouTube review analyzing the AI markers pulled over a million views. The New York Times brought evidence to Hachette, and the publisher canceled the contract.
Ballard says she didn't personally use AI. Her claim is that a freelance editor she hired for the self-published version used AI tools without telling her.
